It influences our balance, stability, and posture, and is essential for the motor coordination of our bodies. But what happens when proprioception is impaired, and how can wearing a soft brace help improve it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is proprioception?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Proprioception, also known as kinesthesia, is <strong>the body\u2019s ability to sense its own position and movement,<\/strong> as well as force and heaviness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensory neurons throughout the body\u2014collectively known as proprioceptors\u2014process stimuli and provide feedback that the body uses to coordinate its movements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if receptors in and around a limb\u2019s muscles and tendons sense risky levels of continuous deformation, they will \u201ctell\u201d the body to initiate reflexes to help stabilize and protect the limb from excessive movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can injury affect proprioception?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Though proprioception is a difficult sensation for an individual to identify, its impairment or loss is far more keenly felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In extreme cases, such as an autoimmune response to an infection that attacks the body\u2019s sensory neurons, the sense of position, movement, and touch can be completely lost.
